Whenever I am designing a room, I love to incorporate lots of decorative pillows. Not only do they bring a sense of comfort to a space, but they also help tie in all the different elements and the overall style in a room.

Pillows have the ability elevate a space by adding pattern, color and texture. And the best part? Refreshing a room with pillows doesn’t require quite the commitment as changing out furniture or painting your walls.

When I am itching for a change in my living room, bedroom or even office, my first thought is to simply change out my pillow covers because it is quick, easy and doesn’t a massive budget.

Liven Up Your Space With Pattern

My sitting room needed some excitement, so I chose to incorporate these decorative color block pillows. I found these handmade pillow cases on Etsy and quickly fell in love.

Why Pattern Matters

Prints and patterns add visual weight to a room. What exactly does that mean you may ask? The Visual weight of a room can be discovered by the area of a room that instantly and almost instinctively catches your eye.

It’s pretty easy to test. When you walk into a room, take a look at the design as a whole. Most of the time, one is able to sense if the room feels visually balanced or if its too cluttered on one side or the other.

When it comes to interior design, the goal is to create a balanced visual weight. Think about it. how would it feel if you walked into a room that had all its furniture pushed into one corner. It would probably feel a little odd—not very balanced thats for sure.

Because the eye is naturally drawn to prints and patterns, they are great to incorporate into a room that may need more visual weight behind it.

Pillow cases are ideal for adding small splashes of pattern into your home because they don’t require a total “flip” of your space. Simply pick out a few pillow cases that look like “you” and add them to your couch or accent chair. Your patterns can be as bold or subtle as you wish!

A Subtle Statement

Incorporating pattern doesn’t have to look like bright colors and bold prints. This antelope pillow cover is for all the neutral lovers out there who want a rich print that will stand out while not completely stealing the show. I have these pillow covers in my living room and 10/10 recommend them.

How to Properly Fluff Your Pillows

Whether you’re a fan of the “chop” or not, it’s important to know how to fluff your pillows. Correctly fluffing your pillows will prevent feathers from poking out and will make your beloved pillow inserts and beautiful pillow cases last much longer.

DIY: No Sew Lumbar Pillow

People always ask where I purchased this antelope bolster pillow they are typically pretty surprised when I tell them I made it. I’m no expert pillow maker, but I will humbly say I am impressed with how this turned out. This was an easy project and something I would happily do again—and trust me, I don’t say that about every DIY.

Amazon Pillow Inserts

Over the years I’ve searched high and low for the perfect pillow insert and I have to say, these are my favorite by far. They are budget friendly and come in lots of different sizes.

Helpful tips for pillow inserts

  • Always size up. If I have 20” x 20” pillow cover I will order a 22” x 22” insert to fill it with.

  • Toss your new pillow insert in the dryer for a few minutes to fluff. Do not use heat. This is also good to do periodically with inserts you’ve already been using that are in need of some refreshing.

  • Get down feather inserts for the perfect “chop”
