3 Easy Home Decor Changes
that make a big difference
Easy? Yes. I promise. Sometimes a simple change can totally change the overall look and feel of your home or space. If you aren’t in the mood to lift ceilings, replace flooring or renovate an entire bathroom, then 1) I am totally with you on that 2) you came to the right corner of the internet. I am all about easy and doable projects that take as little time as possible. What I am sharing today aren’t necessarily projects although the first change I suggest—changing out hardware— will require a drill or screwdriver. Not so bad, huh? Okay, now that you know these are truly easy changes, I hope you follow along for the fun! Check out my top 3 suggestions for a simple home refresh.
Hardware
There are so many great hardware options online these days. Don’t be afraid to take off that old hardware and replace it with something new to fit your style. I have changed the hardware in lots of spaces in our home because it’s such an easy thing to do. When searching for hardware, you first have to decide if you are looking for a knob or a handle. If you’re looking for a handle make sure to measure the width between the two holes so you can order correctly. Below I have linked some of my favorite hardware for you to check out!
Rugs
For larger rugs—in main living spaces—I prefer to stay neutral. We have multiple neutral rugs laying around throughout our house and they make decorating and changing things up so much easier. The base is neutral so everything else doesn’t have to be. I love Turkish and oriental rugs as well. We have a few small Turkish rugs mixed in to add a little interest and a pop of color. Here are just a few places we have Turkish rugs: in our entryway area, foyer, guest bathroom, entryway space, in front of our kitchen sink. When looking for a rug, I always consider it as an investment piece. I have bought lots of cheap rugs in my day and they never seem to last. Now, I don’t mind to splurge on a good rug because I know it will last! A few things to keep this in mind when searching online, stay away from printed options. Always look at the edges closely in the images provided to make sure it doesn’t look too cheap. Try to purchase from a retailer that I can return to in person. Shipping a rug as a return isn’t easy so I try to avoid that. You can check out my blog post on rug sizing here. Check out some of my favorite rug options below!
Lighting
Lighting has the ability to completely transform a space. It has practical benefits as well as stylistic. Not only does it illuminate a room, but it also has the power to enhance the overall aesthetic of a space. Changing the mood in a room can truly be as easy as flipping a switch. If you are considering changing the lighting in the room, I would first ask yourself the question “what is the purpose of this space?”. Kitchens and bathrooms are areas in your home you want well lit. I mean, who wants to cut vegetables with a sharp knife in a dimly lit room or put on makeup in a room with low lighting and bad shadows? Living rooms are a great place to have different “layers” of lighting—chandeliers, lamps, scones, etc. It’s up to you how bright you want your lighting in this space, but if you want this room to feel relaxed, welcoming and comfortable then you may choose bulbs that have warmer tones. If the goal of a room is productivity, then I would suggest bright lighting and lots of natural light if possible in spaces like offices and at-home workout rooms. Whether you opt for bright lights or warmer lights, I hope this goes to show the importance of lighting.
Now let’s talk about light fixtures stylistically and some tips for incorporating different types of light fixtures in your home.
If you aren’t wanting to take on the task of rewiring or doing any sort of electrical work, then I suggest elevating your space by incorporating lamps because they are the easiest way to introduce more light into a space. If you have ample natural light flowing into your space then you don’t have to worry as much about the amount of light your fixture gives off—at least during the day time—so you may have more freedom when choosing light fixtures that fit your personal style and make a statement all by themselves. I am amazed at some of the designs I have seen over the years for light fixtures. West Elm and Anthropologie have some of my favorite lighting—it’s all so unique. Sculptural and geometric chandeliers and pendants are beautiful options if you want to make a statement in your space.
I encourage you to walk through each room of your home and take note of where a new lamp, sconce, pendant or chandelier could make a difference and help elevate the entire look and feel of the room. Floor lamps are a great way to fill awkward corners and an easy solution to brightening dark corners. Floor lamps also add height to a room so everything isn’t all at the same level-it creates a point of interest for the eye. Table lamps are my go-to I realize I need extra light in a room or space. You can use table lamps in your entryway, bedrooms, living room and office. If you have a lamp you’ve been wanting to incorporate into a space, but you don’t have an outlet nearby, I have the best solution for you! These battery operated light bulbs from Amazon have been a game changer for me. I now have the freedom to put lamps wherever I want without stretching extension cords all over the place. These light bulbs are wonderful if you have antique lamps or sconces that you need to rewire….but don’t necessarily want to or know how to.
